You read it here first. The reason for the neoliberal and neoconservative fear of Iran is that the next big alternative to be posited to their ideology right here in the West is going to be Shia Islam, which is going to find a following among disaffected right-wingers, especially young men, and among disappointed left-wingers, especially young men. But this post is a practical one, of immediate urgency.
Compared to our friends in Saudi Arabia, who inspire, direct and fund terrorist attacks on our soil, Iran is the least of our worries. Indeed, it was our own Home Office, MI5 and MI6 that made Manchester the global centre of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group. The Manchester Arena attack was the result.
But there are British prisoners and detainees in Iran, and Dominic Raab could bring them all home before the end of this week. He could do so by boarding a plane to Tehran, with his smartphone in his hand. Immediately before landing, he should tweet that he would not be leaving without them, including Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who is the principal victim of Boris Johnson's drunken incompetence. The cameras would be waiting, and our citizens could all be brought home.
But Raab has not done this, nor will he. Johnson has not done this, nor will he. Jeremy Corbyn has not done this, nor will he. None of those who will be lining up at the Labour Party Conference to succeed the 70-year-old who had failed to win outright at two General Elections has done this, nor will they. If I were an MP, though, then I would already have done this.
Another hung Parliament is coming, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party is now in the process of registration. After nearly 30 years of suggestion, speculation, and even a sort of preparation, I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham. The crowdfunding page is here, and buy the book here.
