"The four-day week" is a shorthand term. Some people might still go to work on five or even six days of the week, at least if they wanted to.
But the concept of the working week would have come down from 40 hours, or thereabouts, to 32 hours, or thereabouts.
And yes, that would mean that a lot of people went to work on only four days of the week.
It is not a matter of whether this is going to happen in the present century. Such is mechanisation that it simply is.
The questions are how we ensure no loss of income, and how we use the newly available time. Those two questions are not unrelated to each other.
The answers to them from most Labour MPs and from almost all of the others would be unattractive in the extreme.
Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party is now in the process of registration.
After nearly 30 years of suggestion, speculation, and even a sort of preparation, I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham.
