Science Is Not Politics

Scientific data is data, not policy. And this or that loss of biodiversity may or may not be a politically acceptable price for human access to food and energy, in particular. To define the desire for those resources as problematic in itself is obscene, and could only be done by people who knew that their own food and energy were never going to be under any kind of threat.

We are beset by a failure to appreciate that life is the geological force that shapes the Earth, and that the emergence of human cognition fundamentally transforms the biosphere, not least by the uniquely human phenomenon of economic growth, so that human mastery of nuclear processes is beginning to create resources through the transmutation of elements, enabling us, among other things, to explore space and to exploit the resources of the Solar System. Instead, Mother Gaia reigns supreme, and we are expected to fight wars for Her even while, under Her petticoats, we shiver and starve in the dark.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.

  1. The Marxists and Greens are right about this. When you think about it, it’s insane to measure human quality of life in terms of growth in GDP.

Our GDP has grown while educational standards have fallen, mass immigration, crime and living costs have risen, home ownership has become unavailable to all but the rich and our country’s culture and environment has been desecrated.

It’s time to realise that it’s a capitalist delusion that growth=happiness. Quite the opposite, actually.
