At The Threshold

After last week's two-to-one kicking, the Conservative Right, never mind any electoral force to the right of that, now matters so little that the net migration target, which theoretically existed throughout the Coalition years, has now been abandoned.

The nearest thing to a sop is the £30,000 threshold, based purely on income, not on "skills". But that is wildly unlikely to make it onto the Statute Book.

The people in the Conservative Party who would fight to save it are the people who do not matter. The people in the Conservative Party who do matter would never wear it.

By the way, the inclusion of overseas students in immigration figures was opposed by Enoch Powell in the Rivers of Blood speech. That one, too, is well and truly doomed on the floor of the House of Commons.

There is a real case against open borders, not that anyone is making it at the moment. Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it.

I will stand for this parliamentary seat of North West Durham, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. By common consent, Labour, the Conservatives and I are each on 30 per cent support, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
