Might the defeat of Clive Robson at Consett North, far from having indicated the decline in the influence of the Catholic Church, have been an expression of it in protest at the withdrawal of free transport to Saint Bede's?
Although the trend goes back a lot further, might not that be a significant factor contributing to Labour's woeful municipal performance across the Consett area?
