These are Paul Ryan's 15 minutes, that's all. Why are the usual suspects so keen on someone who has
never worked outside politics?
After his father had died, Ryan could not have afforded college without government assistance. He now proposes to abolish the self-same scheme. Nice.

Can you name every unsuccessful running mate since the War? Or even every
successful one? Forget about him.
If this pick proves anything, it is that, like McCain last time, Romney is beyond despair when it comes to getting out his party's base.

Or what claims to be its base, even though it seems to have little or no
impact on the eventual outcome of the Presidential nomination process.
I was pretty shocked by the Ryan pick. I was figuring Romney would go for a "boring" candidate like Pawlenty or Portman. But Paul “Ayn Rand” Ryan, the man whose budget proposes to essentially abolish Medicare? The Democrats should have a field day with this guy.
ReplyDeleteThe worst Vice Presidential pick remains Tom Eagleton, who everyone assumed was too mentally unstable (though he continued to be elected to the Senate afterwards). Spiro Agnew had to resign as Vice President due to disclosures about bribes he took as Governor of Maryland, before his selection. Then you have Sarah Palin.
ReplyDeleteActually there is something of a tradition in the United States of selecting Vice Presidential candidates who are not only bad picks politically, but utterly unsuited to be back-up Presidents, which is basically the job. The country really has been very, very lucky when you look at its history closely.
