There is quite enough urban and coastal influence over the Presidential nomination process through the big money donors, and through the New York and Los Angeles media. It is only fair that there be some balance at the beginning of that process, with crucial early momentum dependent on the support of somewhere like Iowa.
Last time, Iowa picked Obama, who went on to sweep the board among black Evangelicals and the decisive white Catholics that November while also picking up a significant minority of white Evangelical support. Presidential Elections are not decided by white liberals. That is just the way it is.
And last time, Iowa picked Mike Huckabee, economically one of the most left-wing governors in American history, and against abortion and same-sex “marriage” while in favour of Second Amendment rights. Who knows how the Republican Party might have done if it had paid attention?
This time, with no Democratic contest, it looks quite possible that Iowa will pick that pro-life gynaecologist and obstetrician, Ron Paul, with his opposition to bailouts, to wars, and to the erosion of constitutional checks and balances. Making that the Republican platform for Obama to match and exceed. Bring it on.
Everyone who believes in any one or more of those causes should be registered as a Republican in this cycle, in order to vote for Paul and force Obama fully into line with those views. By no means only in Iowa. But starting there.
