Upon Examination

Anyone, of either sex, who does less well than he should have done at an exam because of some football match or tournament thoroughly deserves his fate. Anyway, that match or tournament will be watched by no more than half of boys (and around one fifth of girls), because football is of interest to no more than half of men (and around one fifth of women).

However, there is no avoiding the fact that the "gender gap" began precisely with the introduction of Thatcher's wretched GCSEs. Girls do better than boys because the whole thing is designed to ensure that they do. Not the only problem with GCSE. But certainly one of them. David Cameron and Michael Gove can do nothing about this, because that would entail denouncing Margaret Thatcher in the strongest possible terms.

How hard could it be to examine everyone both by coursework and by final examination, simply awarding the lower mark as the final grade? Sadly, a great deal easier than admitting that there was nothing Iron about the oft-turned Lady.
