    Quite right. Russia and the Slavic peoples, in the admittedly imperfect form of the USSR, invaded Afghanistan as the Christian West's first and last bulwark against what we now understand as militant Islam. The insane preference of Wilson and others for bloodthirsty Muslims over our slavic coinheritors of the Christian tradition demonstrated the true evil of the Cold War, in pitting Christian brother against Christian brother instead of uniting them together against a common, and much more deadly because much more insatiable, enemy.

    She makes a lot of sense to me, although she is wrong about which way round things happened.

    Wilson was, however, certainly responsible for creating the Islamist threat in its present, particularly virulent form.

    What did he think was the alternative in Afghanistan? What do people think is that alternative today? California, but without Proposition 8? We are talking - now, brace yourselves for this - about AFGHANISTAN.

    Come off it Reuman. There was no good side in Afghanistan in the 1980s and for our own interests the even worse side won because we made sure they did. Just like Yugoslavia.
