Sixty Is The Magic Number

With the defeat of Ted Stevens in Alaska, the Democrats are now well on the way to that filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

Only the ongoing dispute in Minnesota and the run-off ballot on 2nd December in Georgia stand in their way. And those are the only two states still in play.

What sort of Democrat can win Alaska or win back Georgia? Oh, that sort of Democrat.

But why is someone like that in the Democratic Party at all? For reasons of economic populism and (these days, since the GOP sold out completely) foreign policy realism.

Which are, of course, the right reasons.
