Profession: None

Jim Murphy has no degree to show for his nine years at university collecting student union sabbatical positions.

He followed them up with a year in some party non-job, leading into a parliamentary seat at the grand old age of 29.

Wikipedia (I know, but even so) lists him as "Profession: None."

Quite.

  1. Even you were once a barman in a workingmen's club.

    1. I occasionally still give that as my occupation.

My CV runs that, college porter, Open University tour guide, municipal filing clerk, market research interviewer, supply teacher, university tutor, professional cripple, with freelance journalist somehow bubbling away in the background to all of it.

Mixed-race, born in St Helena. Entirely state-educated, entirely within County Durham, all the way from playschool to MA. First generation university, didn't go straight from school. Now disabled.

I'm no Neil Fleming, that's for sure.

    3. For a funeral, but yes. I have always remained on very good terms with each of my many mansions. Why, I have been back in three of them only today.

People are always pleased to see me, which I cannot imagine is true of Jim Murphy, and which is the opposite of the case with Neil Fleming. Admittedly, that can these days be because people are pleased to see that I am still alive. But even so.

The gales of derision at Murphy's candidacy from everyone apart from the right-wing papers and the BBC have been positively Flemingesque. Neither of them has ever had a job.
