För Sverige - I Tiden

Many thanks to James Bartholomew for his article in this week's Spectator.

Apparently, Sweden is no longer social democratic and happy.

Sweden, it turns out, is now ever more capitalist and ever more miserable.

Quite.

  1. Great point. Also, I noticed that Bartholomew makes the usual claim that socialism means putting everybody on benefits, when in reality, it was the Old Left that argued against such dependency and it is the neoliberal Right that prefers to keep people on benefits as opposed to putting them to work in public works programs.

Indeed, if you want to get really extreme, the communist bloc countries had the most extreme pro-work governments in history, to the point that they conscripted practically all able-bodied adults to work. I don’t completely agree with that policy, especially with regard to mothers, but it still shows that the Left is not always pro-idleness.
