Going For Gold

After 30 years of, in their own minds, bitter disappointment, the Conservative Right are a cheap date. They are delirious with glee at having been given two out of nine positions as unpaid advisers to a middle-ranking Cabinet Minister. One of those two has been imported from the other side of the world, having renounced his British citizenship in his thirties. Yet they are happiest of all about him.

But I do hope that it will be, not Tony Abbott, but Daniel Hannan that they will get into the House of Commons at the earliest opportunity, in order to contest next year's Conservative Leadership Election. Hannan believes in the gold standard. A battle between that and Rishi Sunak's Modern Monetary Theory, which Sunak ought to adopt in full against quite so opposite an extreme, would be far too good to miss.
