The candidates for Leader of the Liberal Democrats are accused of being economically to the left of Labour. But that is not exactly saying very much.
Although she never did it, Theresa May used to talk about banning public contracts for tax-avoiding companies. Whereas that is now held up as proof of the Lib Dems' essential Maoism, how could anyone possibly be against such a ban? And that was before the Budget of March 2020, which ended the era that had begun with the Budget of December 1976.
In accordance with its historical norm, Labour is now the party of saloon bar economic illiteracy about how the State might one day "run out" of money that "really belongs to the taxpayer". Mercifully, though, there is never going go be another majority Labour Government. The Centre is the think tank for this new era. It already has plenty going on.
