The opening up of the Indian supermarket sector to direct foreign investment, spelling the end of traditional markets and small shops, is being fought to very end.
The ties of family, community, national sovereignty and cultural integrity still bind in the second most populous country on earth, a rising superpower.
If the campaigners to save those ties succeed, as they very well might, then the tyranny of globalisation will have met a formidable obstacle and suffered a defeat which will reverberate throughout the world.
