Cyrenaica's historic ties are to Britain. But I do not promote the silly, non-U Francophobia of the sort of people who voted for Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair. In fact, I do not blame the French at all for this one.
With Blair effectively Foreign Secretary, we have entirely forgotten the existence of a British national interest distinct from that of Israel and America, in that order.
We had been all ready to scrap the BBC World Service in Hindi, and are still on course to scrap those in Portuguese for Africa and, for pity's sake, in English for the Caribbean.
