The Bare Minimum
Minimum pricing is not the panacea for this country's endemic drunkenness, but it certainly has its place. However, we now discover that, even if they wanted to, the alcohol manufacturers could not arrange such a scheme among themselves, since that would be a breach of competition law. Was there ever anything - anything at all - less conservative than capitalism? Oh, well, over to the force that makes family values possible in practice: the State.

What was that list a few days ago? Paul Foot, Auberon Waugh, Alan Watkins, Michael Wharton: you wanted the natural heir of each to be an independent director of Sky News and the Times. Looks to me like you would have to fill all four positions. I am not the only person who thinks that. I know you don't do blogosphere v. MSM stuff, but there is no one on Fleet St. and its in house magazines who could have written this. There used to be, see the above list. But not now.
