The Right To Unite

I don't know why masochistic trade unions fund New Labour.

And I am not at all convinced about this North West business, the traditional Labour vote there being largely Catholic in addition to being, as everywhere, economically left-wing, morally and socially conservative, and patriotic, certainly when compared to New Labour on all three counts.

But the fact remains that Unite is an enormous organisation the members of which pay their full whack of tax in this country, indeed rightly have no option but to do so.

  1. I suppose labor unions still consider politics to be worthwhile. But the problem is they cannot compete with contributions from big money interests like large corporations and super-wealthy individuals.

Perhaps it is time for the labor movement to go back to more grassroots work, such as more workplace organization or direct action to help working people, like mutual aid societies.

Besides being more practical, this strategy would perhaps also improve the standing of organized labor in the eyes of regular working folks, who would directly benefit from a more grassroots movement.
