Cameron's Cost-Cutting

With his proposed cuts in Ministerial salaries, with his proposed end to the subsidised food in the Palace of Westminster (a cost below negligible, in the great scheme of things), and with all the rest of it, Cameron is dropping broad enough hints. This is not within any context of tackling income disparity, including the gap between Westminster insiders and the rest of us. Rather, this is about re-restricting office to the independently wealthy.

  1. My God you're right! This isn't about an attempt to position himself as a spending cutter, it's a plot to shut the proles out of Parliament! Why don't more people know?!

  2. Why are you happy for the monarchy to be continued and rule the country, complete with massive wealth, on the grounds of noblesse oblige, when you are against it for MPs? I thought you didn't believe in a meritocracy?

  3. Ant, Cameron is very successfuly taking advantage of the present popular mood on this.

Groungee, the Windsors would be rich anyway as private individuals, and when it comes to the Crown Estates we get back far more than we would if we had to give them back (which we would) and then merely tax the income from them.
