The huge scandal that, for some unknown reason, isn't.
John Bercow wants a new seat of Saint Stephen's, with only MPs as the electors and with no party candidates, to which in practice the Speaker would always be elected unopposed.
Still, good to see that he has written off his chances against Nigel Farage at Buckingham.

That is good to see.
ReplyDeleteAs to the idea of the St Stephens constituency, it's an old one of course, but even so it is typical of our own time. Personally I have yet to hear any reason why the Speaker should not sit, as he always has, as an ordinary MP - or any reason why he should not be opposed as a matter of course, as Speakers often have in the past.
I'm not looking for convincing reasons here, just any reason at all for the Speaker being a special case. I haven't heard one yet.
They have given up not opposing the Speaker in Australia. They will here when Bercow gets in.
ReplyDeleteIn the interview he doesn't actually advocate the idea, he just mentions it.
ReplyDeleteHe may not be a very good politician, but he's better than that.
ReplyDeleteWhen Bercow gets in?
ReplyDeleteWhen Farage gets in, sorry...
