Margaret Beckett For Speaker

She should be in the Cabinet, but this will do nicely. She was certainly a Labour Euro Safeguards Campaign member when I was, and I doubt that she has ever left it, including when she was Foreign Secretary.

Richard Shepherd is too important on the backbenches, not least after today's horrific judicial fiat abolishing trial by jury.

Well, that's the only qualification that really counts, isn't it?

  2. On the other hand she was one of the snouts in the trough, is pro abortion and was a total embarrasment when as Foreign Secretary kept her mouth closed when Israel was running rampant in Lebanon.

    Not really.

    "is pro abortion"

She was the only Leadership candidate after John Smith died to write back to enquirers about abortion. She promised to protect the conscience vote. Under her, there would have been no whipping of human-animal hybridity, or of spare parts babies, or of the legal abolition of fatherhood. She would presumably have voted for those measures. But she would not have whipped those votes.

  5. Her hands were tied by Brown, a fanatical Zionist of the old, old school.

  7. Neither abortion nor foreign policy is in the Speaker's remit.

  8. No but courage and the ability not to be a moral coward and a careerist is probably a talent a good Speaker would need.
