Bermuda’s politicians have wanted “independence” for years, but keep being voted down when the matter is put to a referendum. We now see what that “independence” would mean, and who is really behind the agitation for it. This is not just Britain and Bermuda. There is a third point.
Which should come as no surprise, since the aim of the Founding Fathers was that their new country should encompass all the then British possessions in the Americas, from the north of Canada to Barbados.
And it still is.

Oh, knock it off. The United States is not trying to take control of Bermuda.
ReplyDeleteBermudans are trying to take control of Bermuda.
Can you really blame them for wanting to edge away from Britain just now, what with the rise of that BNP outfit?
"Bermudans are trying to take control of Bermuda"
ReplyDeleteThey already have it. They have decided repeatedly to remain British, but the American-backed political cartel is determined to make them American.
Sound familiar?
Why are you so threatened by this?
ReplyDeleteSo Bermudans want to deal directly with the United States, like any sovereign country would. What of it? Why should they permanently resign themselves to having to get a note from Mommy before entering talks with another state?
Maybe they feel more North American than they do British these days, anyway. Again: what's wrong with that?
They are not a sovereign state and have repeatedly voted not to be.
ReplyDeleteThe political class there may want to be an American vassal (what's "soveregn" about that?), but it has no power to behave as if that were already the case, as it has done over these detainees.
Even Grenada was an indeopendent country that happened to have retained the Queen as Hed of State. Here, we are talking about direct American interference in British territory.
