Many terrible things could be, should be and are said about Henry Kissinger.
But President Obama’s use in Russia of the man who helped to end the Vietnam War and to begin détente with China is inspired. It is a sign, along with his use of Richard Lugar and George Schultz (and, we trust, of others such as Chuck Hagel), that it is he who now embodies so much of what was once best about the Republican Party, just as Bush embodied so much of what was once worst about the Democratic Party.
We may therefore hope that the retention of Robert Gates, and such appointments as those of Hillary Clinton and Jim Jones, are One Term Wonders, if they even last that long.
