A Form of Racism

"Sharon Hodgson was selected for one of the new Sunderland seats last year", I am assured. Well, I thought so too. But several serving Labour Councillors here are adamant that she's on for this seat.

Oh well, if not, then that only leaves Oona King (unless anyone knows another name). Bring her on. I am as surprised as anyone else at rumours that she might leave London. But those rumours are persistent, and her mother is from Gateshead originally.

After all, why not? Surely, New Labour, you don't think that people here wouldn't vote for a black person (actually a mixed-race, more-than-half-white person, like me). If so, then they should respond in kind, and I trust that they will. Such a view of this part of the world is itself a form of racism.

  1. How is it racist for someone to choose not to stand in an election? If she doesn't want to stand, she doesn't have to. I wouldn't be surprised if Oona King herself is totally unaware of these rumours - she's just one of the most famous women who's been a Labour MP and isn't one currently, so she's exactly the kind of name ill-informed people would pick on.

  2. My sources are not ill-informed, and nor is Break Dancing Jesus.

We are ready for whoever Labour tries to parachute in here on the basis that "they'll vote for a pig's bladder on a stick, just so long as it has a red rosette on it".

And parachuting in will be the order of the day. It can only be Labour's own fault that it has no local woman candidate in the frame. But the non-imposition of an all-women shortlist in Hilary Armstrong's constituency would be the end of the entire scheme.
