I yield to none in my advocacy of a much lower (or even a zero) alcohol limit, a higher age requirement for drivers, harder driving tests, lower speed limits, much tougher sentences for transgression, and, above all, much more and much better public transport.
But we have no speed cameras at all here in County Durham. And passing from it into, say the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead (which comes under Northumbria Constabulary), does not discernibly increase the hazards on the road.
The cost of maintaining these devices would be better spent on patrol cars containing pairs of real, live Police Officers.
