Is Bank Of England Independence Under Threat?

Well, here's hoping. The "free" market without any role for the State doesn't seem to be doing too well, either. If you'll pardon the pun, the penny seems to be dropping: that such things destroy everything that conservatives exist in order to conserve.

    it would be better to find regional banks and stock exchnages re-established. the Newcastle Exchange was always most succesful.

    Almopst certainly no longer a realistic option, although I quite agree that this would never have happened to Northern Rock under such circumstances.
