There is nothing more ruthless than the right wing of a relatively left-wing party. But our votes belong to us. And on the great issues of economic equality and international peace, Boris Johnson is better than Keir Starmer, while Donald Trump is better than Joe Biden.
Notice that the London media are presenting the positions of Bernie Sanders, such as universal public healthcare, as wildly extreme. Partly, that is because they inhabit an entirely American culture, and specifically the kind that votes for Biden. But it is also because they wish to implant in the minds of British voters the idea that the NHS is the gulag.
Although quite why they are bothering, who knows? It is psephologically impossible for Labour to win in 2024, so Starmer can dream on about resuming the NHS privatisation that began in 1997, there having been no such concept before then.
And Johnson knows that he is dependent on people and places that voted for Jeremy Corbyn in 2017, and which would have done so again if it had not been for Brexit, so he has ruled out any sale of the NHS as part of any trade deal with the United States.
In which case, the Americans have no need of a trade deal with the United Kingdom. It would be of no use to them. Trade between the two countries is already vast, and could simply continue as now. The only reason to codify it was to flog off the NHS, and that has been ruled out.
As for Sanders and abortion, weren't Trump's successful nominees to the Supreme Court supposed to have settled that one? Isn't the Court just supposed to be waiting for a case to come before it? Or have I missed something?
Ours is the 2020 Vision of a new political party, a new think tank, a new weekly newspaper, a new monthly cultural review, a new quarterly academic journal, and so much else besides. I will be standing for Parliament again here at North West Durham next time, so please give generously. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
