Karie Murphy spent last year desperately trying to explain to the Labour Party that a betrayal of Brexit would cost it scores of previously safe seats. A peerage is the least that it owes her.
The ennoblement of the great Professor Prem Sikka is excellent news. The raising to the ermine of Tony Woodley, Bryn Davies and Katy Clark is welcome, even if the last name does largely concede that Labour is finished as a serious electoral force in Scotland. The elevation of Sue Hayman is a nice enough gesture to the Right, which could have put forward far worse names than hers.
But the Government must not be permitted to move the House of Lords to our beautiful North of England. The prices, the traffic, the hangers on, the "security": London can bloody well keep Parliament in its entirety.
