Defend and Extend

Rebecca Long-Bailey's position on abortion did not bother Momentum, and it will not bother Unite. The Clinton Tendency, however, is going berserk over her view that the term limit should be the same for disabled as for other unborn children (Margaret Thatcher legalised abortion up to birth for disability, but the disability does not have to be specified), that pro-lifers should be eligible for public and party office, and that the Catholic Church is as entitled to an opinion as anyone else.

Where liberal and at least ostensibly social democratic opinion are concerned, then gone are the days of John Smith, Charles Kennedy and Alex Salmond. On the Left, Long-Bailey has nothing on Ronnie Campbell, or on the late Bob Parry. She has nothing on George Galloway. But in calling for a specific change in the law, then she goes further than, for example, Jacob Rees-Mogg. As remarkably few people seem to realise, he is only of the "personally opposed" persuasion.

In 1992, Theresa May campaigned specifically against abortion in what was then still the very, very Irish Catholic town of Consett, although of course in those days there were still other reasons why her party stood no chance of winning there. As Prime Minister, however, she took an altogether different view. That is before we even start about Boris Johnson. So Rees-Mogg, for example, will never be the Leader of the Conservative Party, even though he is only "personally opposed".

Whereas Long-Bailey may yet be the Leader of the Labour Party, even though she favours at least one specific tightening of the law on abortion. Her candidacy was already in trouble, but not because of this. This is no place for the unwitting, yet with her unwitting connivance the classically "not political, just Tory" Board of Deputies had successfully forced thousands of her potential voters to leave the party, or not to join it, or not to bother voting, right when the crucial second preferences were tied between her and Keir Starmer.

Never mind the Vatican dictating social policy; some people cannot forgive the Church for having educated them. Here we see a foreign state dictating foreign policy, and directly controlling a major political party. I will be standing for Parliament again here at North West Durham next time, so please give generously. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
