It has always been cheaper to go to the theatre than to go to a professional football match.
People who chose the latter over the former (of course, some people have always done both) have always knowingly made the more expensive choice because that has been, as it remains, what they have preferred.
Perhaps the sweetest of all the Fabian dreams, free entry to galleries and museums, was at last made a reality by the last Government.
It turns out that the beneficiaries are using it to compensate for the loss of rather more basic free facilities.
Well, if that is a problem, then bring back free public conveniences, the disappearance of which has oddly coincided with the ageing of the population.
But the objection is lost on me. People have to go. If, by going, they are exposed to the risk of seeing a bit of art as well, then so much the better.
