Change and Choice

Of course climate change is real. The question is what we do in order to live with it. There is in fact a close kinship between "leave it to the market" and "leave it to Mother Nature". Both are being washed away by ongoing events.

We must reject any approach to climate change which threatens to destroy or prevent secure employment, or to drive down wages or working conditions, or to arrest economic development around the world, or to forbid the working classes and non-white people from having children, or to inflate the fuel prices that always hit the poor hardest, or to restrict either travel opportunities or a full diet to the rich.

The need for State action has never been more apparent. That has to be the right State action.
