Where Were You In '62?

15 years off being born.

But why is no one making any kind of fuss about this year's fortieth anniversary of American Graffiti?

It invented the cult of 1950s and early 1960s, small town, teenage America. It was one of the first summer blockbusters.

And it made George Lucas rich enough to make Star Wars; in tribute, he even put space versions of the yellow deuce coup and the drive-in diner in Attack of the Clones.

  1. Coming of age nostalgia, Mr. L? Doesn't sound like your kind of thing. But then you have been known to write about football and rugby, neither of which sound like your kind of thing, either.

  2. I am interested in cultural phenomena. But no, no one could accuse me of pining for my gilded youth. People who were social successes at that age cannot have had the necessary formative experiences to be anything of any importance, or even of any great use, later on. They were too busy doing other things.
