Consett, that is.
I never understood why Red Velvet was not simply refused a license, as all members of the then Licensing Committee, including several dear friends and revered mentors of mine, wanted to do.
Whatever legal obstacle now exists to such peremptory dismissal of these application by the elected representatives of the community needs to be repealed as part of the urgently necessary restoration of the full powers of local government, and of councillors rather than officers within local government.
But speaking of the local community, it is being put about that that is right behind this establishment. Next year's elections to the unitary county council provide the ideal opportunity to test this claim. Will Red Velvet's proprietor or his nominee contest each of the Consett and adjacent wards, putting out leaflets extolling the wonders of his supposedly flagship local business? If not, why not?
