And Auntie Evan is positively unhealthy.
The descent of the Today programme into
something beyond self-parody continued this morning with Evan Davis's grotesque
"interview" of Ed Miliband, full of literal snorts of derision (one
suspects that Davis is rather accustomed to snorting) and exasperated
schoolmarmish interruptions. It was encapsulated by the assumption that private
health insurance is the norm, or at least characteristic of those in the middle
of society.
Yesterday, we had Nick Robinson use some paid
extra, or member of the production staff, or whoever, to call Miliband by his
brother's name for the cameras. And now this. Both entirely typical, of course.
The fantasy persists that because it is extremely
liberal socially, and because it is staffed by veterans of 1970s campus
Stalinism and Trotskyism, the BBC is somehow of the Left as most people
understand the term. Or at the very least possesses a certain basic knowledge
of how anyone lives on an annual income below six figures. Nothing could be
farther from the case. On the contrary, the first B stands for Blairite.
"one suspects that Davis is rather accustomed to snorting" - miauow! More cream, Dr Lindsay?
