Plus Que Cordiale

Anglophilia may not be the most Gaullist of traits, but then nor are many, if any, of Sarkozy's others. And he really is about as pro-British as he could possibly be. First Bernier and now the Tobin Tax. He cares enough about this key neighbour that he will, if necessary, force us back to having a proper economy: diffused throughout the country, based on things that really exist, and on both counts socially responsible.

  1. Why did the Telegraph sack you? Do you feel at all chastened after all that crowing? Or do you like eating crow?

  2. They didn't, his blog account still works. So he doesn't on either count. Wait until after the Election.

Speaking of which, the Fleet Street email network says that North West Durham CLP is planning to run a pro-life Catholic to stop you giving the seat to the Lb Dems. But the radical feminist lobby is going ballistic and threatening to put up its own Independent if Labour break the rules like that. All Women Shortlist candidates have to be pro-choice.

  3. I have no intention of giving this seat to the Lib Dems. I have every intention of winning it.

If New Labour run a pro-life Catholic then, as you say, they will have broken their own rules about AWS, so I am not surprised that there would be a backlash. But I am not really about the Opposition.

Nor is pro-life my only issue, although it is especially important here in the constituency that contains the old Irish Catholic stronghold of Consett, the remarkable Recusant village of Esh, and Ushaw College. As well as the world's oldest Salvation Army band, the world's oldest functioning Baptist chapel, and the spot at which, following a failed rebellion in 1663, the Quakers adopted the Peace Testimony.

    Now, back on-topic, please.

  4. He's still around alright. But being seen to endorse a non-Tory candidate doesn't really do until the election is out of the way.

  6. Evidently not.

I've done some digging on this candidate business. Watch this space...

  7. NuLab have lost this seat either way. Because of you if they don't run an anti-abortion Catholic, because of the backlash candidate if they do. They say it themselves in private.

  8. Oh, I know. In glorious detail. Who do you think they speak to "in private"?

  9. We know your game. This is about declaring NW Durham a "Catholic" seat where all three parties only ever put up candidates that are not just Catholic but certified Doctrinally Correct by David Lindsay, British agent of right-wing Catholic America, right-wing Catholic Australia and Rome itself. "No one else can win there." Yeah, right.
