The Collapse of The GOP

The only thing that they have in common is that they all hate each other. The Iraq War is the end of them, even if McCain wins.

Wars are obviously not fiscally conservative. Nor are they morally conservative; just think of Vietnam, or indeed of Britain between 1939 and 1945: my late father (whose own response to the Summer of Love, was, in September 1968 and aged 46, to set sail for Saint Helena) was adamant that the roots of the Swinging Sixties were in the Forties, and evidence such as the epidemic of VD on the Home Front bears him out.

Yet the Republican Party has come to define itself as the War Party. Right when the people whom the soixante-huitards moved to give the world Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George W Bush are at last making their way home.

The GOP is finished.
