Bloc Voting

If the Conservatives could take 34.5 per cent of the vote at North West Durham, even with a candidate who lived in Sussex, then why do they hold no council seat here above Parish level, and not even very many of those? Well, in our fairly typical rural and small town way, we elect a lot of Independent Councillors.

Although there are exceptions, they and their voters tend to be the kind of people who vote Conservative at General Elections, who voted for the Brexit Party at the last European Elections, and who voted UKIP at the ones before that. This does mean, though, that while we have essentially Tory local politicians of some distinction, they have no formal connection to the Conservative Party.

Hence, while nobody entertains for one second the ludicrous suggestion that the sitting Labour MP might be reelected or even come second, the latest polling casually allocates North West Durham to the Liberal Democrats as if that were uncontroversial. Owen Temple is a very well-known and well-respected local figure. Unfortunately, however, he is also wrong about enough, and especially about Brexit.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party is now in the process of registration. After nearly 30 years of suggestion, speculation, and even a sort of preparation, I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham.

I would appoint an Independent, a Labourite, a Conservative and a Liberal Democrat in each of the County Wards, ideally including at least one person in each of the former District Wards, to work with me and with local people. I would also appoint a Political Advisor from within each of the Independent, Labour, Conservative, and Liberal Democrat blocs. The crowdfunding page is here, and buy the book here. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
