There now needs to be a straight "Which Union?" referendum in Northern Ireland, between remaining in the European Union outside the United Kingdom, and remaining in the United Kingdom outside the European Union.
Northern Ireland has had a good run. It was never expected or intended to last this long. The Government's rule at the pleasure of the DUP, suddenly the object of scrutiny for the first time, has brought home to everyone over here just how foreign the place is. There is no seat in England, Scotland or Wales where the DUP could keep its deposit, never mind win.
The DUP would "regretfully" have advocated Remain if the old man had been dead a little longer. By the time of the "Which Union?" referendum, he will have been.
