Kingdom of the Mind

Douglas Carswell grew up at Charterhouse during term, and in Uganda the rest of the year.

For that matter, his close associate, Daniel Hannan, grew up at Malborough during term, and in Peru (not even a Commonwealth or an English-speaking country) the rest of the year.

Ask them about the popular television programmes of Britain in the 1980s, when they were teenagers. Ask them about the pop music. I bet they couldn't tell you about these things.

Their insistence that extreme libertarianism is the most British of positions, or even has anything at all to do with this country's political culture, so that adherents to such things as the National Health Service are presumably suffering from false consciousness, needs to be seen in that light.

As does "the Anglosphere".

With Carswell's impending secession from UKIP, there is about to be a party, complete with an MP, founded specifically on these theories.

Let's see how much support it garners.

  1. You have always been right about Ukip, no matter how much abuse you have received for it. You are absolutely bang on the money with this post.
