Dishonourable Discharge

Durham County Council is crowing about its 10 years as a unitary authority. All of them have been spent under the Leadership of Simon Henig, whose position finally became morally and politically untenable a week ago today, when the jury in my trial was discharged. If the Council re-elects him as Leader after that, then it plainly and simply has no self-respect, and it ought to be treated accordingly.

The contract to build Durham County Council's new headquarters has been awarded to the Kier Group, with its history of blacklisting. The Labour Right is already in power in municipal chambers the length and breadth of the land. And this is what it looks like. The Member of Parliament for North West Durham, who is supposedly our future or even our reigning Red Queen, has never said a word.

Henig squats in County Hall, surrounded even in Cabinet, never mind in the Labour Group, by people who would have been my character witnesses if his mates in the Crown Prosecution Service had not had them all ruled out, which tells you all that you need to know. Does he think that those people like him? Or even respect him?

They know how he stole the Leadership. They know that from that point in 2008, the people of County Durham, including themselves, have been as Palestinians under his Occupation. They know that they can grow potatoes in the potholes of his incompetence. They know what he has made them do to the DLI Museum, and to the Teaching Assistants. They know that he has cut bus services to the bone while putting up a bus-stop that was not on even any of his few remaining bus routes.

They know that he has fielded decoy candidates in local by-elections. They know that he has awarded that contract to the blacklisting Kier Group. They strongly suspect that he is on the fiddle with that one, among others, such as the Cricket Club. They know what he is doing to me. Some of them have known me for 35 years. More than one of them has been known to introduce me as, "The man who should have been our MP."

Third generation Who's Who entrants do not go to prison. But if you want the every evil doing of Simon Henig to be recited under parliamentary privilege, then it has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post.

I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks. And in the meantime, get rid of Henig as Leader of Durham County Council. Or have you no self-respect?
