Assent No More?

I have always known that the real threat to the monarchy would come from the Right. The views of someone like Jeremy Corbyn are hardly news, but what difference have they ever made? In any case, the Left has things to do that simply would not necessitate the abolition of the monarchy, just as they never have in the past.

But the monarchy is contrary to the first principles of the New Right, of Thatcherite meritocracy. And it has never done anything for the Old Right, for the people whom it has kept sweet through it all. The Royal Assent to the Cooper Bill seems to given a lot of the latter a bit of a jolt.

I would transfer all non-ceremonial exercises of the Royal Prerogative, including Royal Assent, to six, seven, eight or nine of nine Co-Presidents, with each of us voting for one candidate, and with the top nine elected to hold office for eight years; as much as anything else, this would enfranchise the people who inexplicably looked to the monarchy to protect conservative values.

Another hung Parliament is coming, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
