Twenty-First Century Britain

If Clacton (including Jaywick, the most deprived village in England), is not in twenty-first century Britain, then it what century or what country is it?

As surely as Inner London, one of the richest places in the world and by far the richest place in Europe, Clacton, including Jaywick, is twenty-first century Britain.

Matthew Parris and Nigel Farage alike might also care to note that Conservative Party membership in Clacton is going up.

Nine of the 10 poorest areas in Northern Europe are twenty-first century Britain. 11 areas poorer than Poland are twenty-first century Britain. What would be the second-poorest United State of America, between Alabama and Mississippi, is twenty-first century Britain.

It is people who did not already know these things who need to catch up. Matthew Parris is one.

But another is Nigel Farage, who thinks that what Clacton needs is its sitting MP. A fat lot of good he has ever done the place. Indeed, his departure from his former party is serving to increase its membership in his constituency.
