I expect that Italy is much like Britain or anywhere else in Western Europe: if the Catholic Church did not marry cohabiting couples, then She would have had almost no weddings in a good 15 years.
That being about the length of time since a Pope last held one of these, as it were, mass weddings.
They are married now. And something moved them to want to be, according to the rites of the Catholic Church.
