Philpott Facts

This was anything but a fatherless home, and it had two full-time wages, fully taxed and all the rest of it, coming in.

Even when Philpott's mistress took her wage away with her person and her children, his wife was still bringing in hers.

Say it again: his wife. His lawful wedded wife, whom he married in church, and to whom he will doubtless remain married until one of them dies.

Of the six children who died, five were his, and all of those were the products of that fully legal, church-blessed marriage.

  1. Depends what you mean by lawful. Perhaps in English Law but not in the eyes of God. This was his second marriage.

  2. It was in a Catholic church. The first one must have been annulled. The five children of this one were all at the local Catholic primary school.

  3. His second marriage could also be annulled. The catechism states that fidelity is demanded of the spouses. His relationship with both women started before his marriage which means he entered into the union with the deliberate intent to be unfaithful. Therefore the marriage is a lie.

  4. I take that point; his mistress was their bridesmaid. But neither of them shows any desire for an annulment. Quite the reverse, in fact.
