No Donkey In Simpson's Town

Kevin Maguire has decided against it. Iain Malcolm has rather more surprisingly come to the same conclusion. The terms of South Tyneside Chief Whip John McCabe's endorsement of Malcolm's fellow Horsley Hill councillor, Mark Walsh, make it quite clear who is going to be the next MP for South Shields.

Walsh is also endorsed by the Liberal Party on South Tyneside, where by its own standards it is quite strong, or at any rate active. Fiercely anti-austerity, and with a history of opposition to the neoconservative war agenda all the way back to Yugoslavia, the Liberal Party was part of the No2EU - Yes to Democracy formation at the last European Elections. "Not the Lib Dems," indeed.

The Labour candidate would have won, no matter what. But such a candidate endorsed by the Liberal Party would be a tremendously welcome sign. And it looks as if that is going to happen. Truly, life after David Miliband.
