Critical Friends

Back in the days when New Labour was led by Tony Blair and the other lot by Michael Howard, I was repeatedly told that each party was now led by its most pro-Israeli member, and deeply disillusioned former Cabinet Ministers from both sides implored me not to write, even in jest, that our most unaccomplished 16-year-olds should be conscripted directly into the IDF, on the grounds that "if the wrong person reads that, then it will happen". They were not joking.

Well, perhaps it was the IDF desecration of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, but today's World At One featured none other than Tony Blair, horrified at recent events, though characteristically bereft of any practical solution. What will Netanyahu and Lieberman do if more serious figures among their natural supporters start to utter better-constructed versions of the same concern?
