Bitter and Twisted

Are the industrial and agricultural poor of Pennsylvania, of the US generally, and indeed of the West generally, as "bitter" as Barack Obama suggests? And if not, why not? They have plenty to be bitter about. But, as they say over there, don't get mad, get even.
