From Upper Beeding To Strasbourg

An interesting piece on PM about the West Sussex village of Upper Beeding, where an impending Parish Council by-election is being contested by a member of the BNP.

Everyone knows that that party is going to win seats on the Greater London Authority this year. Come the next European Elections, it will need the support of a mere one in ten of those in the South East who can be bothered to vote at all, putting at least one seat in the bag, and quite conceivably delivering a second.

The four-party systems in Scotland and Wales might keep them out there, and of course Northern Ireland is a whole different story. Here in the North East, they would need one third of the vote, and they are not going to manage that, although they are still going to do well. But in every other English region they stand some sort of chance; in several, they stand a very good chance indeed.

Never let it be said on here that no one has tried to prevent this.
