To anyone who grew up in the North East, Bridget Phillipson’s accent is immediately identifiable as middle-class, as is mine. I assume that Mancunians have the same reaction to Lucy Powell’s, since her mother was a teacher and her father was a social worker.
Like a lot of people from the North, the circus act that they are the latest to play to a London audience has always driven me up the wall. And it now involves my own generation’s affecting to have grown up in the 1930s. To hell with that. Where is Seb Payne when you need him?
