Tarry, Rash Wanton?

Angela Rayner has let it be known that she will contest Ashton-under-Lyne, where her majority is a rickety 6,791 over Reform UK, rather than stand where she now mostly lived when not in London, at Hove and Portslade, where Peter Kyle towers 19,881 votes over the Greens.

As the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Kyle would administer digital ID. Would you trust him and his ilk with your children’s and grandchildren’s photographs and contact details? Would you trust the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, which is on course for the contract? In the former case, you may not need to.

Like a serving Government Whip, Kyle was given his big break by the Chief Whip who forced through the Iraq War. Along with the subsequently adjudicated and disqualified electoral fraud Phil Woolas, that Whips’ Office contained Ivor Caplin and Dan Norris, who was notably close to Caplin. All three were made Ministers a few weeks later. Caplin was and is a close friend and the closest ally of his sometime lover, Kyle. Caplin is to answer bail on 8 October.

Nothing comes between Blair and a payout, so Hove and Portslade may well be looking for a new MP, and not necessarily as far into the future as 2029. Step forward, Sam Tarry? As so often, you read it here first.

  1. No one can combine high thinking and low politics quite like you.
